DIVORCE & FAMILY LAW

Divorce is one of the most stressful and significant of life changes.  Ms. Kitto provides thorough and empathetic counsel to her clients going through the divorce experience. As a former accountant, Ms. Kitto understands the importance of focusing on the assets, income and financials and following the money through the taxes returns, bank statements and books as necessary.  Many of her divorcing clients are self-employed and therefore, understanding the financials and collaborating with a party’s tax advisor or bookkeeper become all the more important to getting to the right result for the client. Ms. Kitto advocating for parenting plans and court orders that benefit the parties’ children and their best interests in terms of maintenance, child support or parenting time.

Ms. Kitto brings over twenty years of litigation experience (since 1998) to representing her clients in divorce (also known as dissolution of marriage or family law), working to assist individuals in achieving the best possible outcome during an extremely difficult emotional time. Many divorces are resolved through good faith negotiation, often at mediation. This is most certainly the goal and where possible, Ms. Kitto explores negotiation as much as possible. Unfortunately, not all divorces can be amicable or collaborative. In certain cases, parties are obfuscating income, or self-employment or underemployment are issues that must be explored. Other times, substance abuse or mental illness make a negotiated resolution almost impossible. Parties who are unreasonable, and unwilling to settle during mediation or negotiations may well need a judge to order them to do the right thing allowable under Colorado law. In such cases, litigation, including the discovery process, is necessary, and our firm is prepared to take things to a trial as necessary.
